Producers of British Charcoal & Biochar

Woodchar produce charcoal and biochar from coppice woodland in NW England. We do this by restoring the coppice cycle in neglected woodland, creating and supplying a premium renewable product from trees that regenerate when felled.

We supply charcoal wholesale and biochar in bulk.

Actively managed coppice woodland has numerous environmental benefits, providing habitat and boosting biodiversity. Adding biochar to the soil improves the soil structure, helps to retain minerals, and locks away carbon that would otherwise enter the atmosphere. Barbequing with British charcoal reduces demand for imports potentially sourced from virgin rainforest, it lights easily, burns hot and is in every way a superior product.

We work with owners on the restoration of overstood coppice woodland, with the recovery of woodland from the onset of ash dieback, and with the management of small and difficult to access compartments that may be uneconomical for standard forestry operations.

We can also assist with matters relating to felling licences, woodland creation grants, woodland management schemes and the Woodland Carbon Code, including RPA registration, mapping, applications and claims.

Our ethos is local - we supply a superior product that offsets the import of tropical charcoal, often of uncertain origin, helping biodiversity through the restoration and management of woodland, and are a part of the rebuilding of a local woodland economy largely sidelined in the twentieth century by large-scale mechanisation.

British charcoal is less dense, burns hotter and without smoke. Biochar as a soil additive can help the green-keeping, horticultural and agricultural industries and gardeners move away from an over-reliance on agri-chemicals, which can only be a good thing for the planet.
